1001 Nights of NOT Your Scheherazade: a participatory performance by Samar Zughool

Part of the Proud Baklawa performance | 1–2 November  2025, @19.00 at Bar Bario, Bilderdijkstraat 186, 1053 LD Amsterdam

Join us for NOT Your Scheherazade: a queer, decolonial, and atheist reimagining of the Scheherazade figure from 1001 Nights (also known as The Arabian Nights).

The project seeks to create 1001 Nights of NOT Your Scheherazade as an alternative to the misogynistic 1001 Nights/The Arabian Nights. This participatory storytelling series invites the audience into a collaborative form of storytelling: each episode generates ten new stories, which Samar collects into a growing feminist zine: a feminist, communal take on 1001 Nights. Each night centers on one story in this ongoing performative experience.

The Proud Baklawa performance brings together Arabic-speaking queer community artists, featuring performances by Samar Zughool (she), Stavros Kyrollis (he), founders of Proud Baklawa, an art collective of Arabic-speaking queer community artists in the EU diaspora, and Peppa Clown by social clown Elleke van Gemeren (she).

Free entry: all welcome
